Wind Profiler: Probing Lower Atmosphere

A wind profiler measures the wind at different heights above the ground. It tells the wind that an aircraft will experience when descending or taking off from an airport.

The wind profiler determines the wind by the "Doppler effect". It sends out pulses of radio waves and measures the frequency of waves reflected by small eddies in the atmosphere. The shift in frequency from transmitted waves gives the velocity of the eddies, which move along with the wind.

Sample wind data measured by a wind profiler: Typhoon Maggie in 1999
