The weather was generally fine
over the south China coast today. Locally, it was mainly fine
and very hot
. The maximum temperature recorded at the Observatory was 34.6 degrees in the afternoon, the highest so far this year. High temperatures triggered convective development. Thundery showers
in the evening brought more than 30 millimetres of rainfall to the western New Territories, Lantau Island and Lamma Island. A southwesterly airstream is expected to bring hot
and showery weather to the south China coast over the weekend and early next week.
Besides, Tropical Cyclone Nakri intensified into a severe tropical storm today. At 11 p.m., Nakri was centred about 400 kilometres east of Shanghai. It is forecast to move north-northwest at about 18 kilometres per hour across the East China Sea. Meanwhile, Severe Tropical Storm Halong was centred about 580 kilometres north of Yap. It is forecast to move west slowly in the general direction of the seas east of the Philippines.
