In the unlikely event of a nuclear accident or a suspected nuclear accident at GNPS and LNPS, the objective of emergency radiation monitoring is to obtain timely and comprehensive information on the environmental radiation levels in Hong Kong for assessing nuclear accident consequences and considering necessary countermeasures.

Key responsibilities of the HKO are:

assessing the nature, magnitude and extent of the nuclear accident; and

advising on the necessary countermeasures.
