  • Experts from China and ASEAN countries met in Hong Kong to further SIGMET coordination initiative

  • Wednesday, 13th December 2017

More than 20 aviation forecasters from all ASEAN countries with Flight Information Region (FIR) participated in the Training Workshop on SIGMET Coordination organized by the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) on 4 – 6 December 2017. Meanwhile, more than 20 local and overseas experts, including representatives from airlines, pilots and air traffic control as well as experts from China Meteorological Administration (CMA) and Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) attended the first Expert Group meeting of the Asian Aviation Meteorological Centre (AAMC) hosted by HKO during the same time. Both events aimed at furthering the SIGMET coordination initiative in the region.

SIGMET, a message to alert airlines and pilots, is issued when hazardous weather is expected to affect the FIR. The aim of the Training Workshop is to enhance regional SIGMET collaboration to improve consistency of the SIGMET across FIR boundaries. During the Training Workshop, there were lectures and hands-on training on the HKO developed SIGMET Coordination web platform for issuance of coordinated SIGMET as well as a joint Panel Discussion where the experts and participants of the training workshop exchanged views about the ways to have further coordination in providing better aviation services to the region. The participants also took the opportunity to share their respective practices, including the criteria for SIGMET issuance, and issues in SIGMET provision.

Apart from lecturing at the Training Workshop, the AAMC experts also discussed the end user needs in future, potential ways to meet the gap, verification issues and ways to involve the meteorological offices in the region in the process.

ASEAN countries with FIR include Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, The Philippines and Vietnam.

Further background on the joint efforts between HKO, CAAC and CMA on the establishment of AAMC can be found in a past press release:
