  • Tuesday, 23rd January 2018

The success story of collaboration between the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) and the Senior Citizen Home Safety Association (SCHSA) in using weather and climate information for elderly care services is showcased in the report “Climate Services for Health – Case Studies” recently published by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The publication profiles over 40 examples of tailored climate services used to manage health risks around the world and shares good practices that can strengthen collaboration between the meteorological services and the public health sector.

With a view to providing better care for the elderly people in Hong Kong, HKO has been working closely with SCHSA in recent years to enhance care services through the utilization of weather and climate information, including the study of health impact of weather and climate on senior citizens. Services provided and activities organized include: a new version of HKO’s “Weather Information for Senior Citizen” webpage, enhancement of SCHSA’s “e-See Find Service” application with real-time weather information, annual joint press conferences to promote proactive and timely assistance for the elderly when cold weather is expected, and the "Sky of Silver Age" weather photo competition and workshops to encourage the elderly people to adopt a wholesome outdoor lifestyle by maintaining an active interest in the weather that affects them.
