Mr CM Shun, Acting Director of the Hong Kong Observatory, Mr Eric Bohm, Chief Executive Officer of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) - Hong Kong, and Mr Ben Hung, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong) Limited, officiated in the WWF Earth Hour 2010 Kick Off ceremony on 21 February 2010.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Shun mentioned, "According to the latest figure, the carbon dioxide concentration has already reached 385 ppm, which is one third higher than 280 ppm, the level before the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century, and also the highest in the last several hundred thousand years. The trend of global warming is very obvious. This is mainly caused by over consumption of energy and resources by human beings, and therefore everyone has the responsibility to take action to tackle climate change - by adopting a simple lifestyle to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Let's take action together, and encourage our friends and family to adopt low-carbon practices and to support WWF's Earth Hour campaign".
The WWF Earth Hour 2010 (http://www.wwf.org.hk/earthhour/en/index.php) Kick Off ceremony introduced five simple actions to encourage Hong Kong people to adopt a low-carbon lifestyle and demonstrate how small changes in daily life can make a difference to the Earth. The five actions are: (1) Say no to appliances' standby; (2) reduce shower time; (3) use less disposable dining utensils; (4) eat less meat and more vegetables; and (5) turning off lights for one hour at 8:30 pm, 27 March 2010. The Observatory has already joined the campaign in response to the appeal by WWF.
