  • Scouts visited the Tai Mo Shan Weather Radar Station

  • Thursday, 16th November 2017

To commemorate the 110th anniversary of World Scout Movement, Scout Association of Hong Kong organized “Go Hiking! 110 Hills Climb” on 8 October 2017. The mission was to encourage the scouts to admire, protect and preserve the natural environment. Hong Kong Observatory supported the event by opening the Tai Mo Shan Weather Radar Station to the scouts.

38 scout hiking teams trekked to the peaks of 110 mountains over 300 m height in Hong Kong. The Director of the Hong Kong Observatory, Mr Shun Chi-ming, officiated the kick-off ceremony at Tai Mo Shan, the highest mountain in Hong Kong. He applauded the beautiful nature of Hong Kong while noting that not many Hong Kong people appreciated it. He encouraged the scouts to appreciate and enjoy the beautiful nature. He further made a metaphor comparing hiking and life, which both had ups and downs. He encouraged young people to strive through the downs and there would be ups ahead. “Hiking can build up both physical and mental strength”, he added.

Without any surprise, scouts seized the opportunity to chat with Mr Shun. Guess what made them most curious? The answers were the accuracy of weather forecast and the chance to take photos with the Tai Mo Shan Weather Radar Station. Actually, Mr Shun was one of the contributors for the set up of Tai Mo Shan Weather Radar Station, and he visited Japan in person to collect information for the establishment.

In addition, Mr Lam Chiu-ying, ex-director of the Hong Kong Observatory, shared his experience to standby at the radar station during typhoon situation. He recalled that winds were blowing so fiercely that made scary loud noise throughout the night. The scouts held their breath to hear the story.

Climbing to the mountain top was already an achievement. Reaching the highest point (961 m) at Tai Mo Shan Weather Radar Tower was another exciting moment!
