Mr. Li Sun-wai, Scientific Officer of the Observatory, at the invitation of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), travelled to Tanzania of eastern Africa to deliver a series of lectures on public weather services in late October 2010.
The lectures were a major component of a workshop organized by the WMO under the Severe Weather Forecasting Demonstration Programme for eastern Africa. The programme aims to enhance technical capacity in operational weather forecasting and service delivery to general public and key application areas such as the agriculture and fisheries. A total of 21 meteorologists and officers of disaster management authorities from 8 countries in eastern Africa attended the workshop. The lectures delivered by Mr. Li focused on the important role of public weather services in supporting disaster prevention and mitigation, the success of which hinged on the communication and coordination between meteorological services and disaster management authorities.
The participants remarked at the graduation ceremony that the workshop was an excellent platform for sharing their experience with lecturers from WMO, UK, India and Hong Kong, as well as among their colleagues in the neighbouring countries. In particular, Mr. L. Ochira from Uganda opined that the workshop was very successful. It was resourceful and he had learned a lot in public weather services, disaster prevention and mitigation.
The invitation of Observatorys staff by WMO to deliver lectures on the experience in public weather services demonstrated the international recognition of the Observatory's expertise in this area.
