The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO), Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand (CAANZ) and Bureau of Meteorology of Australia (BoM) worked together with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and World Meteorological Organization (WMO) to jointly publish a set of three posters to promulgate the best practices on the provision of SIGMET to warn weather phenomena hazardous to aircraft-in-flight.
The three posters cover the essential steps for meteorological offices to prepare and disseminate SIGMET messages for Volcanic Ash (VA), Tropical Cyclone (TC) and other weather phenomena (WS) including thunderstorms, dust/sandstorms, turbulence, mountain waves, icing and radioactive cloud. HKO was responsible for the development and production of the TC and WS posters while BoM was responsible for the VA poster. CAANZ designed the posters' layout. Apart from serving as a quick reference for the aviation forecasters worldwide to issue SIGMET messages for their responsible airspace, these posters also highlight the importance of SIGMET to the safety of flights for the aviation users.
These posters, originally developed as an initiative of the Asia and Pacific Region, will be distributed by ICAO to all Contracting States around the world. To facilitiate their widest promulgation within the aviation community, they are made available in electronic form on the Observatory's website at: http://www.hko.gov.hk/aviat/sig_poster/sig_poster.htm.
The posters are also available on the website of ICAO at: http://www.icao.int/anb/sg/metwsg/Poster_SIGMET.htm
