At the invitation of the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN ISDR), Dr M C Wong, Assistant Director of the Hong Kong Observatory, gave a presentation at the "Regional Workshop on Emergency Information Flow in Disaster Situations" held in Bangkok from 13 to 14 June 2005. The 2-day workshop was organized by the UN ISDR, United Nations Economic and Social Commission For Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU). The objective of the workshop was to explore the roles and responsibilities of broadcasters in natural disaster reduction. Other speakers included representatives from the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), World Meteorological Organization, UN ISDR, Asian Disaster Reduction Centre, Thai Meteorological Department, ABU as well as NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation), Japan. The theme of Dr Wong's presentation was on the dissemination and broadcast of weather warnings in Hong Kong as well as the "Safer Living" outreach campaign on natural disaster preparedness and reduction in Hong Kong. Some 20 broadcasters from countries in the Indian Ocean rim and Japan participated in the workshop. |
