Preface

Powering our Future with Weather, Climate and Water

Season's Greetings! Festivals and celebrations provide the opportunities for busy city dwellers to pause and appreciate the march of the seasons. While relaxing during the holidays locally or overseas, we make references to weather information, warnings and climatological information provided by meteorological services around the world. In this respect, the Hong Kong Observatory plays a vital role both in meeting the needs of the society as the local meteorological authority, and in contributing to the global effort through the World Meteorological Organization.

Every year the World Meteorological Organization celebrates the World Meteorological Day on 23rd March. The theme for the 2012 World Meteorological Day is 'Powering our Future with Weather, Climate and Water'. This calendar illustrates the linkage between the various activities and the services provided by the Hong Kong Observatory and how we could empower our future via these means. I sincerely hope that while you appreciate the weather, climate and water through photographs in this calendar and the use of climatological information in planning activities, you would provide your valuable feedback on improving our services to meet the increasing demands of our energetic city. In today's rapidly changing environment, there are many opportunities amidst challenges. In providing meteorological, geophysical and other services to the community, we will continue to base our efforts on science and innovation, and to embrace the future by continuous improvements in the pursuit of excellence for the betterment of the community.

My heartfelt appreciation to stakeholders from all walks of life for your support and encouragement !

SHUN Chi-ming
Director of the Hong Kong Observatory
