MyOceanWx On Demand - New Weather Information Delivery Service for Shipping Community
The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) has been providing marine meteorological services since its establishment in 1883. In 1915, marine weather forecasts were broadcast to ships for the first time using radio telegraphy.
Contribution of Weather Photos by Voluntary Observing Ships
Weather reports from Voluntary Observing Ships (VOS) provide vital information on weather conditions in the oceans. In addition to typical meteorological observations such as temperature, winds, sea state, visibility, state of sky included in the weather reports, ship officers are also invited to record the sighting of interesting natural phenomena.
Tropical cyclone forecast tracks and rainfall forecasts now available on "Earth Weather"
The Observatory today (21 June 2019) enhanced the "Earth Weather" website with the addition of tropical cyclone forecast tracks issued by the Observatory. Furthermore, apart from existing forecast products of temperatures, wind direction and wind speed, rainfall forecasts from computer model are now also available.
Storm Surge and Sea Waves
Winds blow over sea surface and generate waves that propagate along the wind direction. Waves grow with the strength of the winds. Huge waves generated by typhoons can rise above 10 metres in the open sea.
Strengthened content for "Tidal Information" webpage
The Hong Kong Observatory today (18th July 2019) strengthened the content of the "Tidal Information" webpage with the addition of selectable display of extreme water levels recorded during the passage of tropical cyclones in the past on the time series charts of the tide gauge stations.
Tenth Session of Ship Observations Team Convened in Hong Kong
The Hong Kong Observatory organized the Tenth Session of the Ship Observations Team (SOT) of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) - Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) Joint Technical Commission for Oceanography and Marine Meteorology (JCOMM) in Hong Kong during 1-4 April 2019.
Director of Hong Kong Observatory highlights Observatory's upcoming initiatives
The Director of the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO), Mr Shun Chi-ming, today (March 21) hosted a press briefing in which he highlighted the HKO's upcoming initiatives, reviewed the weather of Hong Kong in 2018 and elaborated on the weather outlook for this year.
Launching the Weather Website for Greater Bay Area
In line with the development of the Greater Bay Area of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, the Hong Kong Observatory, in collaboration with the Guangdong Meteorological Service and the Macao Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau, launches the weather website for Greater Bay Area today (23 April).

Overview of Tropical Cyclones in June 2019
One tropical cyclone occurred over the western North Pacific in June 2019. Sepat formed as a tropical depression over the western North Pacific about 400 km south-southwest of Osaka on 27 June.
