"Cool Met Stuff" : Monsoon Depression vs Tropical Cyclone

7 August 2020

"Sinlaku" was the second tropical cyclone that affected Hong Kong in 2020. It originated from a monsoon depression over the central and northern parts of the South China Sea. The Observatory issued Strong Wind Signal No. 3 immediately after the cancellation of Strong Monsoon Signal. The last time that such change of signal happened was in 1993. What is a monsoon depression? Under what circumstances could a monsoon depression develop into a tropical cyclone? Let’s find out from the latest episode of "Cool Met Stuff".

The video is now available on the "MyObservatory" mobile application and the Observatory's website for your viewing (programme is broadcasted in Cantonese).
