“Cool Met Stuff”: Lightning Detection: A 20-Year Journey

    21 March 2025

Lightning commonly occurs in Hong Kong during spring and summer months. To monitor lightning activity near the Pearl River Estuary, the Hong Kong Observatory, in collaboration with the Guangdong Meteorological Service and Macao Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau, established a lightning location system twenty years ago. This system provides different types of lightning location information services to the public. The latest episode of Cool Met Staff will introduce the development of the lightning location system over the past two decades.

The video is now available on the "MyObservatory" mobile application and the Observatory's website for your viewing (programme is broadcasted in Cantonese).
