"Cool Met Stuff": Earth's orbit and climate

4 July 2025

In early July, Earth reaches its farthest point from the Sun during the year, yet Hong Kong is experiencing the summer heat. This reveals the fact that seasonal temperature variations on Earth are not mainly determined by our planet's distance from the Sun. In the latest episode of Cool Met Stuff, it will introduce the concepts of aphelion and perihelion, and briefly exploring how Earth's orbital motion relates to the formation of seasons.

The video is now available on the "MyObservatory" mobile application and the Observatory's website for your viewing (programme is broadcasted in Cantonese).
