Observatory's Staff attended the Expert Meeting of the Typhoon Committee

Dr. T.C. Lee, Senior Scientific Officer of the Hong Kong Observatory, attended the Typhoon Committees Expert Team meeting for the assessment of the impact of climate change on tropical cyclone track and affected areas in the region. The meeting was held in Shanghai during 21-22 November 2011. Other experts present were from the Shanghai Typhoon Institute, the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory of USA, the Meteorological Research Institute of Japan, and the Macao Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau. Two representatives respectively from the Typhoon Committee Secretariat and the World Meteorological Organization also participated in the meeting.Members of the Expert Team individually conducted a series of literature review and assessment work during the year and met in Shanghai to discuss the findings and assessments. The outcome of the meeting will be compiled into the second Expert Team report - Assessment report of the impact of climate change on tropical cyclone track and impact areas in the Typhoon Committee Region to be published in 2012.
In early 2011, the Typhoon Committee published its first Expert Team report - Assessment report of the impacts of climate change on tropical cyclone frequency and intensity in the Typhoon Committee Region. Dr. Lee also served on the Expert Team for the preparation of the first assessment report.
The ESCAP/WMO Typhoon Committee is an intergovernmental body under the auspices of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific and the World Meteorological Organization. Currently, it is composed of 14 Members in the Asia Pacific area including Hong Kong, China.
