Anemometer Design Competition
9 December 2008
The Observatory and the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Hong Kong jointly organised an anemometer design competition for Hong Kong's primary and secondary school students. The competition is to promote realization of novel designs and innovative ideas, and to enrich the student's understanding of meteorological measurement. The creativity of the design, the accuracy and appearance of the wind measurement device are the main judging criteria. More than 50 teams have registered for the competition and the activity will continue until July 2009.
The Observatory and the University of Hong Kong have held various activities including lectures, visits and workshops for this competition. In the workshops conducted on 22 and 29 November, the Observatory staff explained to the participants the standard specification of an anemometer, and answered their enquiries on the details of the competition. Participants were also given hands-on experience on how to use a micro-controller to process data. This practical and interesting knowledge would come useful for the design of their entries. In the workshop held in November, students learned how to make use of electronic devices to count and record wind direction and speed.
