Aircraft-based observations workshop

11 June 2018

The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) hosted a "Regional Workshop on Aircraft Meteorological Data Relay (AMDAR)" during 29 - 30 May 2018 jointly with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and International Air Transport Association (IATA). The workshop promotes the development of the AMDAR observing system over South Asia and South-East Asia.

To enrich participants' knowledge on AMDAR programme, a wide range of lectures ranging from introduction to advanced technical details were delivered by experts from HKO, WMO and IATA. Breakout sessions were also interlaced in the two-day programme to facilitate exchanges among meteorological services experts and airlines representatives on organizing and kick starting their own AMDAR programmes.

The workshop was attended by around 30 representatives, including meteorological experts from India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Russia Federation, Saudi Arabia, Thailand and airlines representatives from Asiana Airlines, Cathay Pacific Airways, Cebu Pacific Air, China Airlines, Garuda Indonesia, Philippine Airlines, Singapore Airlines and United Airlines. Positive feedback was received from participants of the workshop and they commended that the workshop was informative and helpful for them to initiate their own AMDAR programme.
