11 October 2011
Hon-yin Yeung, Scientific Officer, and Chi-kin Chow, Experimental Officer, of the Hong Kong Observatory participated in the Typhoon Committee Roving Seminar 2011. More than 40 meteorologists from the member countries of the ESCAP/World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Typhoon Committee met in Malaysia during 20-23 September 2011 at the Roving Seminar 2011 organized by the Typhoon Committee. The Roving Seminar is organized annually with an aim to promoting interflow and knowledge sharing among the members on various aspects of tropical cyclones. The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MMD) was the host of this year's seminar, the theme of which was on heavy rain and flood hazards associated with landfalling tropical cyclones. Three experts from Hong Kong, Singapore and Thailand were invited to give lectures in the seminar and Hon-yin Yeung was responsible for the topic on operational quantitative precipitation forecast and its application to tropical cyclone conditions. The Observatory's colleagues found the trip to Malaysia very fruitful. Apart from the daily lectures and discussion, MMD has arranged a side visit to the SMART (abbreviation for "Stormwater Management And Road Tunnel", built to tackle the flooding problem in Kuala Lumpur) Control Centre, which gave the participants a better understanding on urban flood detection and control.
