Observatory sharing experience on public weather services with meteorologists in Eastern Africa

At the invitation of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Mr. Tong Yu-fai, Scientific Officer of the Observatory, delivered lectures on public weather services at the Eastern Africa Regional Training Workshop on Severe Weather Forecasting and Warning held in Tanzania between 28 November and 2 December 2011. His lectures encompassed such areas as severe weather warning systems, effective warning service delivery and use of mobile technology in dissemination of weather information in Hong Kong.The Workshop was organized by WMO for meteorologists of eastern Africa. A total of 25 meteorologists from Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi attended the Workshop. The Workshop aimed at enhancing the participants' capacity in severe weather forecasting and warning service delivery to general public and key clients such as those in the agriculture and fisheries sector.
The invitation of Observatory's staff by WMO to deliver lectures on the experience in public weather services reflected the international recognition of the Observatory's expertise in this area.
