Brothers Point Terminal Doppler Weather Radar Provides Windshear Alerts for the Hong Kong International Airport

28 April 2015

The Terminal Doppler Weather Radar (TDWR) at Brothers Point (Figure 1) took over from the aged radar at Tai Lam Chung to be the main radar facility for detecting windshear near the Hong Kong International Airport from 28 April 2015 onwards. The old radar will then be used as a backup for operation.

The TDWR is a fully automatic system. It is an effective tool to detect windshear caused by thunderstorms. The information is transmitted to the Air Traffic Control for immediate relay to pilots in flight, safeguarding flight safety.
