Standby Signal, No. 1

Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued
by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The Standby Signal, No. 1 is in force.

This means that a tropical cyclone now centred within about
800 kilometres of Hong Kong may affect us.

At noon, the tropical depression over the central and
northern parts of the South China Sea was estimated to be
about 640 kilometres south-southwest of Hong Kong (near 17.4
degrees north 111.0 degrees east) and is forecast to move
northwest at about 15 kilometres per hour in the general
direction of the vicinity of Hainan Island.

Under the combined effect of the tropical depression and the
ridge of high pressure over southeastern China, local winds
are occasionally strong offshore and on high ground. There
are squally showers and thunderstorms over Hong Kong.
Showers will be heavier at times. According to the present
forecast, the tropical depression will maintain a distance
of around 600 kilometres or above from Hong Kong. The
Standby Signal, No. 1 will remain in force at least until 8
p.m. tonight. The need for issuance of the Strong Wind
Signal, No. 3 thereafter depends on the distance between its
associated strong winds and the Pearl River Estuary, and the
change in local winds.

Seas will be rough with swells. Members of the public are
advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in
water sports.
