No. 8 Southeast Gale or Storm Signal

Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued
by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The No. 8 Southeast Gale or Storm Signal is in force.

This means that winds with mean speeds of 63 kilometres per
hour or more are expected from the southeast quarter.

At 4 a.m., Severe Tropical Storm Tapah was centred about 190
kilometres southwest of Hong Kong (near 21.0 degrees north
113.0 degrees east) and is forecast to move northwest or
north-northwest at about 18 kilometres per hour edging
closer to the coast of western Guangdong.

According to the present forecast, Tapah will skirt within
200 kilometres southwest of Hong Kong and make landfall over
western Guangdong in the next few hours. Unless Tapah adopts
a track closer to the Pearl River Estuary or intensifies
significantly, the chance of issuing higher tropical cyclone
warning signals is relatively low. The Gale or Storm Signal,
No. 8 will remain in force at least until 11 a.m. today.

The rainbands of Tapah are bringing heavy squally showers to
the Pearl River Estuary. Locally, gale force winds are
affecting offshore areas, and winds on high ground are
reaching storm force. Seas are very rough with swells.
Members of the public are advised to stay away from the
shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

Under the combined effect of spring tide and storm surge,
the water level over the coast of western Hong Kong will
rise higher than normal this morning, flooding may occur
over parts of the low-lying areas. Members of the public
should take necessary precautions.

In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at
Ngong Ping, Tap Mun and Cheung Chau Beach were 76, 68 and 58
kilometres per hour with maximum gusts exceeding 103, 83 and
71 kilometres per hour respectively.
